Job Description:

This company is involved in a township local area development project and will use the Urban Planning Interns skills in supporting community based local area development opportunities mapping and the possibility of staged development of public places and spaces to support the community activity. This is a project in conjunction with different NGO and CBO partners and so it will be challenging and has some interesting possibilities. The intern will work directly under the supervision of the Neighborhood Programs Manager and will receive both general training on policies and procedures and specific training needed to complete assigned tasks. The process of training and monitoring will allow the intern to take pride and ownership in projects, and results will directly reflect the intern’s efforts.

The urban planning intern will primarily work with the following tasks:

• Assist in the development of new housing and economic development programs
• Perform research
• Assist in fieldwork
• Perform statistical analysis.
• Assist in grant writing and research
• Conduct comprehensive neighborhood studies
• Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the neighborhood
• Provide recommended actions the neighborhood could take related to study findings

The successful intern will:

• Be self motivated with a background in urban planning, economic development or business
• Present a professional work appearance
• Interact well with the public
• Have excellent teamwork skills
• Have excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Have a positive attitude
• Possess the ability to work both independently and within groups
• Have strong computer skills with basic office software
• Demonstrate an ability to use or to learn GIS software (ArcGIS preferred)
